Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.     Identify any six (6) challenges faced in using traditional methods in carrying out Quantity Surveying duties;

2.     Outline any three (3) current technological tools being used by Quantity Surveyors;

3.     Explain at least five (5) factors responsible for the low usage of these tools;

4.     Interpret the adoption of AI and identify any two (2) emerging tools in the Nigerian construction industry;

5.     Explain ten (10) cost, time and productivity effects of adopting AI and other emerging tools;

6.     Outline any three (3) policies put in place to encourage the adoption of AI and other Surveyors to get involved in usage of emerging technologies to meet best practices.

7.     Emerging tools;

8.     Distinguish five (5) needs for awareness and training of Quantity Surveyors on usage of AI and other emerging tools;

9.     Identify at least six (6) ways of encouraging young Quantity Surveyors to get involved in the usage of these emerging technologies.

Course Contents

Overview of traditional methods of carrying out Quantity Surveying duties. Challenges faced in using these traditional methods. Technological advancement in the 21st century. Level of adoption of technology in Quantity Surveying practice globally.  Level of adoption of technology in Quantity Surveying practice in Nigeria. Current technological tools being used by Quantity Surveyors. Factors responsible for low usage of these tools. Adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging tools in the construction industry. Cost effect of adopting AI and other emerging tools. Time effect of adopting AI and other emerging tools. Effect on productivity. Adoption of AI and perceived threat to job losses in the construction industry. Policies put in place by government to encourage adoption of AI and other emerging tools. Need for awareness to increase adoption. Need for training to equip the Quantity Surveyor on usage of these emerging technology tools to improve efficiency.
