This course teaches students AI and data journalism, its importance, and basic concepts as well as data analysis using Computer Assisted Reporting (CAR). As a follow-up from that background, students will be exposed to methods for acquiring and cleaning data, including web scraping and using Application Programming Interfaces APIs as well as techniques for data-driven storytelling and how to integrate data into news stories. The course will also expose students to AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude, and their applications in journalism as well as the development phase for capstone project, including data collection, analysis, and reporting. In addition, the course will expose students to the ethical implications of using AI and data in journalism, including bias, privacy, and transparency. To achieve this, this writer has consulted widely in the field of AI and Data Journalism to put this course in proper shape. The goal therefore is to equip students of Mass Communication in North-Eastern University with critical knowledge and expertise on the values of AI and Data Journalism in the media space, starting from Gombe State.
