Community health is a medical practice which focuses on people’s well-being in a particular geographical location. This is essential in the health sector which covers programs to help people in protecting and improving their health. 

This course will make the students understand their role in helping neighborhood members in protecting themselves. The students will be exposed to different methods in achieving good health condition in the community.

Objectives

The objectives of the course are to:

  1. explain community health;
  2. explain the role and objectives of community health;
  3. explain the physiology and care of the new born;
  4. describe the process of growth and nutrition in children;
  5. explain the assessment of health and immunization status of children;
  6. concept of integrated management of neonatal and childhood illness;
  7. explain the rights of a child.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. define community health;
  2. state at least five (5) roles and objectives of community health;
  3. describe the care of the new born
  4. state seven (7) nutrients required for growth in children;
  5. define immunization;
  6. define the concept of integrated management of neonatal and childhood illness;
  7. state at least four (4) rights of a child.

 

Course Content

Definition and components of community health.

 Define roles and objectives of community health.

 Explain the physiology and care of the newborn. 

Process of growth and nutrition in children 0-5 years. 

Basic concepts of immunity and immunization. 

Assessment of the health and immunization status of children (0-5 years). 

Children who are at risk for specific conditions. 

Concept of Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI). Conditions which may expose the child to grave danger. 

The Rights of the Child. Concepts and development of child health care. 

Culture and newborn infant care. Basic concepts of good nutrition.

 Nutritional needs of the newborn. 

Major nutritional deficiencies. 

Growth and development.
